Indigo's Journey

Overview

Multiple Personality Disorder is a rare mental illness in which the subject has two or more distinct personalities. In recent years, this illness has been renamed Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). It has also been called Ego State Disorder. Regardless of the clinical name attached, it is important to understand that this illness has been terribly misrepresented by popular cultural and media outlets. It is my hope to explain both the injury process and the healing process as it pertains to Multiple Personality Disorder.

Because MPD does not have an organic or chemical component, the possibility of successful treatment is very high. People who are recovered from MPD are said to be "integrated" because the fragmentary personalities are united in a more functional configuration.

Indigo's Words: Please note that I am not a psychiatric professional. Most of what I write on this site reflects personal experience with the injury/recovery process of MPD. I also utilize the experiences of two other individuals I've personally known that have attempted to recover from this type of psychic injury. Because I am not a professional, some of the vocabulary I use in this site is proprietary and may not match clinical terminology used by actual psychological professionals.
